Martijn Huisman, PhD
Martijn Huisman is a psychologist and epidemiologist at the Department of Epidemiology and Data Science, Amsterdam UMC, and the Department of Sociology, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam. He is Scientific Director of the Longitudinal Aging Study Amsterdam (LASA), which is a Dutch nationally representative prospective study of ageing. It’s aim: to investigate the determinants and consequences of cognitive, emotional, physical and social functioning related to ageing. The LASA team is a mixture of epidemiologists, psychiatrists, health scientists and social scientists that all contribute to this aim. Martijn’s own research interests include topics like health inequalities, resilience and depression. For instance, he has studied the resilience of older adults who have lived a life of socioeconomic adversity and of older Turkish and Moroccan migrants in the Netherlands, who are generally known to have low socioeconomic position and faced substantial challenges during and after settling in their host country.
